BOUNTIFUL – For the majority of Tuesday night’s game against Syracuse, the Viewmont Vikings girls’ basketball team had the lead.
Once they lost the lead, however, it was gone for good, as the Lady Titans were able to escape the Viewmont gym with a 50-49 victory.
Working to get back into the game, the Lady Titans were able to tie the game at 43 after the third quarter. They took a three point lead after Demi Hamblin hit a quick bucket early in the fourth quarter, and Collette West closed the gap back to one point with a basket on the other end.
Following a time out, Syracuse junior Taylor Coffey hit a pair of buckets from inside the three-point line, giving Syracuse a 50-47 lead.
Caroline Brown’s basket gave Viewmont life in the final minute, but despite several attempts to take the lead, fell short of taking the lead before the final buzzer.
Syracuse was unable to extend on its lead in the closing minutes as well, missing three straight free-throw attempts when the Lady Vikings got into foul trouble.
The Lady Vikings were held scoreless in the final minute-plus, giving Syracuse the win.
The game started with the Vikings taking a 20-18 lead after one quarter, and the game had all the makings of a shootout. Both the Viewmont and Syracuse defense clamped down in the second quarter, but the Vikings still held the lead at 31-28 after the first half.
Kauri Tye, who finished with six points, got into foul trouble in the first half and was forced to sit for many minutes throughout the game. She had four points early in the game, but had three fouls and was shut down for the remainder of the first half.
She came back in briefly in the third quarter and scored the first points in the second half, but was quickly called for her fourth foul and forced to sit again. She fouled out with roughly five minutes left in the game.
Darbi Farrell finished the game with 14 points in the loss. Caitlyn Larsen scored eight points in the loss.
For Syracuse, Hamblin and Jayda Bovero each scored 12 points. Coffey finished with a double-double, scoring 10 points and pulling down 10 rebounds.
