CENTERVILLE – A trio of homes was broken into on Wednesday afternoon using opened garage doors, and Centerville Police are urging residents in the area to leave them closed if they’re unattended or not being used.
“Three home burglaries today in Centerville,” said Centerville Police through its Twitter page. “Suspect(s) entered home by open garage doors. Always keep doors closed.”
Police tweeted out the warning to locals at 5 p.m.
“All three of the robberies happened between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. on the north end of the city,” said Centerville Police Department Assistant Chief Paul Child. “All of them happened with garage doors open, which is part of the reason we wanted to send the tweet out.”
In each case, Child said, the suspect or suspects entered homes through open garage doors and went into parked vehicles. So far, Child reports a purse, a camera and a power tool were taken, along with several other items.
“We also sent the tweet out looking for information from neighbors,” said Child.
Child said there aren’t any leads as to how many burglars are involved, and there are no descriptions available as of publication of this story.
Centerville Police do have photos of footprints and tire tracks; however, and they are attempting to develop information on that evidence.
“The best thing to do to avoid this situation is to keep your garage doors closed, unless you’re monitoring or using them,” said Child. “It’s a common way for burglaries to happen. We’ve had snow blowers and other items taken this time of year, so keeping them closed is best.”
Anyone with information on the robberies should call the Centerville Police Department at 801-292-8441.
