SNOW BASIN, Weber County — A North Salt Lake snowboarder was reunited with his family Monday morning after spending the night on the mountain in an off-limits area of the Snow Basin Ski Resort.

Terence Hulsman 38, was in good condition when he was brought down off the mountain shortly after 10 a.m. on Monday, according to Weber County Sheriff's Lt. Mark Lowther.

Hulsman and a friend were snowboarding at the resort on Sunday afternoon when the weather turned bad, resulting in near white-out conditions, Lowther said. The two decided to snowboard down the mountain and meet at the bottom. The friend made it down, but Hulsman did not.

Members of Snow Basin's Ski Patrol began searching for Hulsman and about 25 members of Weber County's Search and Rescue team joined the search about 5 p.m. They searched until 11 p.m. when the search was called off for the night.

Lowther said the search resumed about 7 a.m., and Hulsman was spotted by a Utah Department of Public Safety helicopter about 8:30 a.m. Because of high avalanche danger the rescue was accomplished with the help of a helicopter.

Hulsman became separated from his friend in the white-out conditions and apparently became disoriented, winding up in the off-limits area, Lowther said.
