FARMINGTON - Davis Chamber of Commerce President Jim Smith is running for the Davis County Commission. He is seeking to fill the position currently held by Louenda Downs, who has decided not to seek a third term.

"During my four years as President of the Davis Chamber of Commerce I have worked closely with our current commissioners as well as our mayors and other elected officials in the county," he said in a press release.

Prior to his chamber of commerce appointment, Smith had worked for about 35 years in the banking

"Although I have never held an elected position, I feel that my experience in the Chamber and the business world gives me a unique insight into the role of a commissioner and will allow me to 'hit the ground running,'" Smith said.

He said his banking experience will allow him "to continue the Davis County ethic of conservative budgeting"

The Farmington resident said the county's demographics "are changing rapidly and we need to actively plan for the growth that is coming. If we have leadership that can coordinate the varied voices of our changing community we can effectively plan in a way that will allow for growth without losing the advantages and quality of life we enjoy today," he said.

Smith cited economic development as one of his key focus points. That will allow for expansion of community resources without a tax increase, he said. In addition, growth should be coordinated and intelligently planned, with his experience working with a broad part of the community a plus, he said.

"We all 'sit in the shade of a tree we didn't plant," Smith said. He and his wife Carolyn are the parents of five children and 10 grandchildren, with one on the way.
