Documentary

Not rated, but there is talk of death

Directed by Sterlin Harjo

English and Mvskoke with English subtitles

Grade: Two and a half stars

A roaming, fascinating look at a small part of the history of the Mvskoke people, “This May Be the Last Time” follows the history and social purpose of their traditional hymns.  Blending Christianity and Mvskoke beliefs and rituals, the hymns are a living testament to an often painful cultural history and carry community members through some of life’s biggest challenges.

The insider’s look is invaluable, and insights are delivered in a simple, rich way that seems to reflect the spirit of the community. Still, the documentary could do with a tighter narrative focus, and while the inclusion of his grandfather’s story is ultimately touching it seems short-shifted in the long run. There are a thousand stories in every community, but no documentary should try to tell all of them.
