LAYTON - Two-term county commissioner Louenda Downs has decided not to throw her hat into the ring to seek a third term.

She said her hesitation in making that decision was put to rest upon announcement from Jim Smith, Davis Chamber President, that he will run for her seat.

Downs said she wanted “...assurance that a new 'someone' will see the value in the conservative vision and direction the county is working hard to realize.”

The Layton resident has been a member of the three-person body since 2006.

She cited “...the good partnerships and working relationships with the cities and businesses, our living economic development plan, continuation of our great library program and cultural opportunities, better trails and active transportation, coordinating human services, and conservative budgeting,” among others.

Downs has been active in up to 34 committees during her service, including many where she has served as chair. Those have ranged from homelessness and various human services boards, to the county library board.

She has a strong background in education, having taught school for seven years in Davis County. She earned her B.S. in education from Weber State University with an emphasis in art and music. She has been a professional musician for more than 30 years, information from the county’s website said.

Downs served eight years on the Davis County Board of Education. She was assistant director of the Davis Education Foundation prior her election to the commission.

The Brigham City native is married to C. Vance Downs. They are the parents of two children. She said she has finalized no plans beyond the completion of her term in early January of 2015.
