NORTH SALT LAKE - Thanks to the power of co-operation, arts and recreation in North Salt Lake is about to get a boost.

Officials are combining North Salt Lake’s Parks and Trails Committee, which hasn’t been active in a few months, with the city’s Arts and Recreation Committee. The new group, which is seeking volunteers, will be responsible for both the NSL Live program and greater evaluation of the city’s parks.

“We wanted to expand the scope of the city’s parks and trails committee,” said North Salt Lake Mayor Len Arave. “We want a group that will be interested in bringing people together and making the city a better place.”

Initially, the city’s Parks and Trails Committee was responsible for making certain all of the trails included in the city’s general plan were implemented.

“They were kind of a steering committee,” said Arave.

Once most of the trails had been implemented, however, the committee was left without much to do. According to Arave, the group hasn’t met for some time, and the terms have lapsed for all the members.

To eliminate this problem, the new committee will focus more on regular evaluations of the parks and trails already in place.

“They’ll determine if there are any improvements that need to be made,” he said.

The move will also get more volunteers working with the NSL Live arts and recreation program. The program is responsible for the city’s Second Sunday Concert Series, the Three Kings bike race, and other activities.

“We’ll get more people to help with concerts and events,” said Arave.

Council member Matt Jensen, who has worked with NSL Live for the last few years, will head the new group. The committee is required to meet at least four times a year, though Arave expects that they will meet monthly.

Those interested in volunteering for the committee should e-mail Arave at  HYPERLINK "mailto:mayor@nslcity.org" mayor@nslcity.org

“An interest in recreation and the arts is good,” he said. “But we’re specifically looking for a whole variety of people.”
