FARMINGTON – When it comes to working for a small non-profit, you usually need to be able to do three jobs at once.
That’s the challenge currently being faced by the people at the Bountiful/Davis Art Center, who are currently looking for a new education coordinator to join the team. The job, which opens up in early February, covers everything from teaching classes to tours to grant writing.
“I’m looking for someone who’s had experience working for a non-profit, has a good understanding of the arts in education, works well with people of all ages and is savvy with computers and social media,” said BDAC Executive Director Emma Dugal. “I know I’m asking a lot, but that’s what the job takes.”
The position, which will start at 30 hours and move up to 40 after a 60-day probationary period, is responsible for the entire education arm of the art center. This includes coordinating and promoting the seasonal classes, handling all in-school visits and tour groups who come to the center, and organizing the monthly Family Art Night.
As with other non-profits, the coordinator will also be responsible for promoting all of these activities, connecting education with other art center offerings and working to keep the art center’s offerings interesting to the public.
“In a non-profit organization, you generally wear a lot of hats,” said Dugal. “We have hundreds of volunteers who help us, but our staff is only four people and an intern.”
In a creatively-focused non-profit like the art center, there are other challenges. Theresa Otteson, the current education coordinator, is also a professional artist who is leaving to focus her energies on her first love.
“I’m not getting enough time to paint and market my own art,” said Otteson. “I decided it’s time for me to be focusing what I need to be focusing on.”
Since she’ll be leaving at the end of January, Dugal is looking for someone to take over Otteson’s many responsibilities as soon as possible.
“She’s done a fantastic job and we’re sorry to lose her,” she said. “She’ll be a hard one to replace.”
