BOUNTIFUL – Viewmont girls’ basketball coach Clint Straatman admitted that the team hadn’t been playing well recently.

However, thanks to a pair of returning players, and solid shooting by Caitlyn Larsen and Katie Toole, the Lady Vikings were able to blow Weber out of the Vikings’ gym in a 57-33 win.

“I thought tonight was an overall team effort, and we haven’t had an overall team effort win like that for a while,” Straatman said. “Weber came out playing really well, and we were able to match that intensity tonight.”

Toole and Larsen were key players for the Lady Vikings in building a 13 point halftime lead. The duo combined to score 21 of the Lady Vikings’ 30 first half points. When Toole went to the bench in foul trouble, Susi Teisina came in and scored four quick points to complete a 10-2 run halfway through the second quarter.

Larsen and Toole finished the half by scoring the last seven points for Viewmont.

“We missed (Teisina) because she’s been gone for a while,” Straatman said. “We’re hoping towards the end of the season that she’s playing at a high level.”

Another missing piece for the Lady Vikings was Tana Singley, who returned from a torn ACL this season. This was only Singley’s second game of the season, but Straatman said having the whole team together was important for the entire team.

“We’re kind of a new team because we’re trying to find new rotations and there’s a new feeling and a new vibe to the team,” he said. “But I think they’re starting to buy into doing this together and making ourselves a really good team.”

By the end of the third quarter, the Lady Vikings had nearly twice as many points as Weber, taking a 51-28 lead. Toole scored 10 of her 18 points on the night in the third quarter.

The fourth quarter was played mostly by the bench players.

“This second time around (region play) I’m hoping our team will play more like they did tonight,” Straatman said. “We’re looking to do better things in the second half.”

Toole pulled down eight rebounds to go along with her 18 points. Larsen finished with a double-double, scoring 19 points with 11 rebounds in the win. Collette West added 11 points for the Lady Vikings.

Viewmont will travel to Syracuse High School to face the Lady Titans Friday at 5:15 p.m.
