LAYTON – Things may be torn up now at Mountain View Baptist Church, but members can look ahead to spring when construction on a massive remodeling project is complete and the church’s ministry can move forward.

The church, located at 2585 E. 3000 North in Layton, is best known for the popular “Journey to Bethlehem,” held each December, but the church offers many ministries to people of all ages.

“For children, we offer AWANA on Wednesday nights. Simultaneously, the church offers a mid-week service and Bible study for all ages,” said the Rev. Darrell Carnley, the church’s senior pastor.

With an estimated 60 to 70 youngsters, church members saw a need to make additional room for its children’s ministry, so last September, ground was broken for a major remodeling project that now affects nearly the entire church.

“The whole building is torn up except our auditorium,” Carnley said.

The church is building a new administrative wing with a conference room, turning the old administrative wing into the children’s wing that will include new classrooms and a check-in center, “that will ensure the safety of our children,” Carnley said.

In this day of church shootings and terrorists, “we want people to be able to bring their children into church and have several layers of protction for them. We want it so people just can’t walk in.” Carnley said.

The current foyer will also be remodeled and new hallways are being constructed to connect the wings.

Construction is about halfway complete. The church opted to do the entire remodel at once rather than build in phases, the pastor said. Carnley admits it’s a mess right now, but adds, “I have a great staff who have held it together.”

There’s been a couple of setbacks with the construction. First, there was a massive windstorm in  November that blew much of the framing that had been done down. Then there were a couple of big snowstorms that temporarily stalled work.

Carnley said the church hopes to be into the new facility by mid-April.

“We’re looking forward to moving into the new building to better serve God’s purpose,” Carneley said.

Mountain View Baptist Church was the old First Southern Baptist Church of Clearfield, Carnley said.

In the early 1990s, the church purchased land at its current location and later changed its name.

Today, the congregation has about 600 to 700 members, about 75 percent of them active or reserve military. Other members are in the area because of their work at Hill AFB.

In addition to the children’s ministry and Sunday worship, the church has a music ministry with a choir that performs on Easter and Christmas and several other times throughout the year..

There’s also a student ministry for kids ages 7th through 12th grade, with a youth pastor brought in from Indiana last year.

“As a group they take trips to different areas,” Carnley said. The kids recently went on a ski trip and have been on mission trips.

For adults, there’s both women’s and men’s ministries with Bible studies. An age-graded Bible study is offered each Sunday before the worship service.
