KAYSVILLE — You don’t have to wait for the ground to warm up to get started on your garden.

Families can make their own lettuce boxes at this month’s Family Garden Night, set for Feb. 24 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the USU Botanical Center Greenhouse in Kaysville. The boxes are designed to make it easier to raise certain vegetables indoors.

“If you have the right kind of light, you can grow greens such as lettuce and spinach indoors all year round,” said Jayne Mulford, coordinator at the nearby Utah House. Mulford is also involved with a lot of the botanical center’s programming.

“Even when it’s cold outside, you can cut yourself a salad whenever you want,” she continued.

Each family will be able to make one lettuce box, which is designed to sustain fragile young plants through the transition from winter into spring. Though gardeners will likely want to move the plants outside when the weather warms to take full advantage of the sunlight, the boxes even help with that process.

“They’re light enough to move around,” she said. “You can find the best spots.”

In addition, Davis County Horticulture Agent Britney Hunter will talk about ways houseplants are good for the environment and tips on how to care for them.

“Plants can really help improve air quality,” said Mulford.

The botanical center holds family nights once a month on a variety of topics.

“It’s an opportunity for families to experience the botanical center and get more familiar with some of the programs and opportunities we have to offer,” she said.

Tickets are $3 per person or $10 for a family of up to six people. To register, visit
