Viewmont’s McKay Butler named First Team All-Region 1

KAYSVILLE
Davis High senior guard Abel Porter guided the Darts boys’ basketball team to a Region 1 title and a berth in the State 5A semi-finals this past season.

Last week the Region 1 coaches voted Porter as its Most Valuable Player, and teammates Jesse Wade and Elijah Kletzli were voted on as first team members.

Porter averaged 14.6 points, 5.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game for the Darts in his final season.* He also helped the Darts finish with a 19-2 regular season record and a No. 2 state ranking prior to the state playoffs.

Wade, a junior, led the team in average points per game with 17.3. He also led the team in 3-pointers (63).

Kletzli, a senior, led the Darts in scoring with 411 points, and average of 17.1 per game. He also led the team in rebounds, averaging 8.9 per game.

Viewmont’s McKay Butler was also voted to the first team in the Vikings initial year back in Region 1. Butler was the team’s leading scorer, averaging 13.5 points per game, and helped Viewmont finish second in Region 1 behind Davis.

Butler also led the team in 3-pointers with 34.

McKay Johnson of Viewmont was voted to the second team after averaging 11 points and seven rebounds per game for the Vikings. Kelton Hirsch and Austin Johnson garnered Honorable Mention votes from the coaches.

Matt Morrell, also a senior, was the last Davis player to make the list as an honorable mention.

Other local high school players to make the list were Layton’s Mike Hibbert (first team), Jarriesse Blackmon (first team) and Brandon Hill (honorable mention); Northridge’s Jacob Bigler (second team) and Dayan Lake (honorable mention), and Syracuse’s Josh Herfel (second team), Josh Thalman (honorable mention), Michael Phelps (honorable mention), Braden Hall (honorable mention) and Kalvin Mudrow (honorable mention).

Jay Welk, who recently stepped down as coach of the Darts, was voted the region’s Coach of the Year.
