BOUNTIFUL – A fire forced the evacuation of thirty-three students from a Davis County school bus after the rear engine caught fire Tuesday afternoon, an official said.

Davis School District Director of Transportation Brian Larsen told the Clipper the bus was entering northbound I-15 at the Bountiful 500 West on-ramp when the fire was spotted.

Larsen said the driver pulled over and the students were quickly evacuated from the bus. No one was hurt during the incident.

According to Larsen, a Utah Highway Patrol trooper spotted the burning bus and used an extinguisher to manage the flames before fire crews arrived.

Larsen said the bus engine developed an oil leak, and that heat from the engine or exhaust system mot likely ignited the oil.

The bus sustained minor damage and was towed from the scene.

The students from Viewmont High School were picked up by another bus and continued their ride home.
