CENTERVILLE -- A 38-year-old man is dead following an officer-involved shooting in Centerville on Sunday afternoon.

John Farrand, 38, was shot just before 4 p.m. after officers got a call of a suicidal man with a gun at 550 S.300 East, according to police.

When officers arrived, they encountered Farrand on the property. He had a gun, according to Centerville Police Sgt. Zan Robison.

"At some point the situation escalated and officers responded with firearms," Robison said.

Ferrand was shot and was declared dead at the scene, Robison said.

No one else was injured. Robison said it is departmental policy to place officers involved in shootings on paid administrative leave and he expects that will be done in this case.Robison dis not identify the officer but said he was one of the most competent officers in the department.

More information will be provided as it becomes available.
