SALT LAKE CITY- Heroes of all kinds gathered together for the kickoff of Salt Lake Comic Con’s FanXperience.

Governor Gary Herbert joined the stage with soldiers, fire fighters and various sci-fi celebrities to declare April 17 “Comic Con Heroes Day” in Utah. It’s only the beginning of three full days of events, along with crowds that are expected to top the record-breaking numbers at last year’s comic con.

“We expect the sequel to be even bigger than the original,” said Herbert.

He read the declaration at the opening press conference, reminding the fans to be heroes to their families and communities as well.

“I think we need superheroes in life, and it’s nice to have so many superheroes here today,” he said.

Several guest celebrities joined him onstage, including Kelly Hu from the TV show “Arrow” and Chandler Riggs from the TV show “The Walking Dead.”

“It’s awesome getting the chance to meet the fans,” said Riggs. “I love getting their insight on the show.”

Events and panels until 8 p.m. April 17, and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. April 18-19. The vendor room, which is nearly double the size it was at last year’s comic con, is also open during that time.

Tickets to the Salt Lake Comic Con FanXperience are still available. For more information, visit saltlakecomiccon.com.
