Redwood Road work to close 1 lane

NORTH SALT LAKE — Motorists are being advised that one lane of Redwood Road through North Salt Lake will be closed Wednesday as the Utah Department of Transportation examines the condition of the road.

UDOT Region One spokesperson Vic Saunders said crews will take core samples on Redwood Road at 600 North in North Salt Lake. The work is expected to take place between 9 a.m. and noon and is in preparation to place a traffic signal at the site.

Saunders said core samples provide important information about the condition of the road surface, allowing engineers to estimate any remedial or reconstructive work that may be needed.

Flaggers will be present to direct traffic and motorists are advised to slow down, be aware of their surroundings and be prepared to stop at the direction of the flaggers.

Family Connection hoping to expand

CLEARFIELD — There’s no money in hand yet, and details are still being worked out – but the bottom line for the Family Connection Center is that more people could be getting help, soon.

That’s thanks to federal Stimulus funding that could be awarded by this summer through the Community Service Block Grant (CSBG) program, says Sharon Anderson, the FCC’s executive director.

“We have a case management program running right now, that we’d really like to expand,” she said.

Part of that effort is to help people get job training and job placement. “We’d really like to be able to help more people get connected with the appropriate resources so they could get better jobs,” Anderson said.

That would include FCC being able to offer budgeting classes and other help “so they can get on top of their whole lives, to be self-sufficient, to gain the skills they need to take care of themselves,” be independent, she said.

“There have been no (firm) decisions made yet. We’re thinking about, evaluating the possibilities,” as far as where the funds could be best used, Anderson said.

The FCC serves as Davis County’s community action agency. According to the National Community Action Foundation, CSBG funding priorities include “employment and economic needs with a special emphasis on ‘sustainable’ economic development.”

The fund further is supposed to be used to help meet short-term and long-term economic and employment needs of individuals, families and communities and provide a wide range of “innovative employment-related services and activities tailored to individual communities.”

The state will receive nearly $4.9 million in overall funding that totals nearly $1 billion nationally.

Anderson also noted that the Utah Division of Housing & Community Development has several million dollars available in funding, some of which could be awarded to Davis County in the near future.

That office oversees such programs as affordable housing, single and multi-family housing programs, home ownership self-help development, and many others.

The FCC operates the youth crisis shelters in Bountiful and Clearfield, as well as the Family Connection Food Bank, transitional housing, education efforts and more.
