LAYTON — Layton’s mother of the year didn’t let a severe stroke stop her.

Ann Layton proved wrong a doctor’s prediction that she would be a vegetable.

“Just three months after retiring from Layton High School and exactly one hour before my wedding, my mother suffered an aneurysm, which caused a massive stroke,” said daughter Danna Sides, one of seven children.

“Mom pitted her formidable will against the odds,” she said. “She learned how to walk again; learned how to make the bed; learned to read. Through months of rehabilitation, she slowly remade her life.”

Now, 12 years later, at 78 years old, Layton is going strong and is fond of saying she isn’t going to endure to the end, “but enjoy to the end.”

Ann Layton and her husband of 52 years, Dan, go out to lunch together every day.

She walks three to four miles a day, actively participates in her literary club as well as the DUP, and is “an obsessive gardener,”  and swims every day, Sides said.

“Mom is the bravest and most determined woman I know,” she said.

While the kids were growing up, mom was very involved in all of their lives, always knew where they were. In Sides’ case, she attended drill competitions and performances. When she came back from college, her mother made sure to cook Sides’ favorite foods.

Her mother was a stay-at-home mom for most of her children’s growing up years, but worked at Layton High when the two youngest were students there.

Ann Layton keeps abreast of the happenings and birth dates of her 28 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Layton’s Mother of the Year also enjoys traveling, one trip including all of her daughters to Hawaii, with another planned this year to British Columbia.

One of Ann Layton’s children is Joy Petro, a  member of the Layton City Council who nominated her mother.
