SUNSET – Raised by a single mother, Kathy Gittins of Sunset knows first-hand how tough and rewarding it is to be a mom.

Kathy was selected as ‘Mother of the Year’ for the city of Sunset.

Gittins is the mother of five kids (4 boys, 1 girl), ranging in age from 12 to 23 years old.

Three of her four boys have served LDS missions; one of them is still serving in New Zealand. Her oldest son was recently married, and her second oldest just returned from his mission. Her youngest son attends Northridge High School. The youngest in her family is well-protected 12-year-old daughter.

Gittins was born in Roy and raised in Davis County.

Before having kids, Gittins planned on being a successful businesswoman - until she laid eyes on her first son.

“I fell in love with him,” said Gittins. “I could never leave him, so I’ve devoted my life to being there for him.”

Gittins has worked for the Davis School District as a kindergartner teacher’s assistant and tutor. She now works from home doing medical coding.

When asked what her secret to being a good mother is, Gittins bashfully responded, “ …Being a mom, and then being a friend. Communication is top,” she said. “You have to talk to them.”

Another big challenge Gittins faces is knowing when to intervene in her kids’ lives.

“You have to know when to step in, and when to let them figure it out,” she said.

When asked about the biggest challenge she’s faced in her 23 years of motherhood, Gittins says, “You’re never given a book. You just have to love unconditionally.”

Gittins also notes that any success she’s enjoyed as a mother couldn’t have happened without a reliable partner. She’s been married to her spouse Wayne for 25 years.

“I couldn’t have been a good mother if I didn’t have an amazing husband,” she said.
