WOODS CROSS – The playoffs for 2A and 3A golf, tennis, soccer and other sports have been underway for the past week.

The rest of the high schools in the state will join in Monday when the 5A schools battle on the links of Bountiful Ridge Golf Course for the right to be called state champions.

Davis, which missed being crowned a champion last year by a single stroke, will look to overcome last season’s shortcomings this year.

Viewmont also finished in the top five last year, and is hoping to improve on its performance this year.

The first round of the 4A and 5A baseball and softball tournament will start Tuesday at respective home sites, and most high schools from south Davis County are expected to be in the playoffs.

In baseball, the Davis Darts held a two game lead over third place Fremont as of press time. They are lined up to face Bingham in the first round.

Viewmont, which jumped to a tie at the No. 4 seed with Northridge, could travel to Jordan or Copper Hills should they make the playoffs.

The Vikings had won five of their last six games to move to a tie with the Knights for the final spot in the playoffs in Region 1. Both Viewmont and Northridge were 6-9 as of Tuesday afternoon.

In the 4A ranks, Region 6 champion Bountiful and second place Woods Cross will each host a first round game when the playoffs start for the Braves and Wildcats.

Bountiful will host the No. 4 seed from Region 7, and Woods Cross will host Mountain View, currently the No. 3 seed from the region.

In the 5A softball ranks, Viewmont will be making the playoffs and could still finish anywhere from a No. 1 to a No. 3 seed after Friday’s game against Fremont.

Davis is on the outside looking in, and could finish as a No. 4 seed.

Woods Cross and Bountiful will both make the 4A playoffs and will have to travel for their respective first round games against the top two teams from Region 7.

Tuesday also marks the first round of the 5A soccer playoffs. Region 1 champion Viewmont will host its first round game against the No. 4 seed from Region 4.

Davis will have to travel for its first round game against one of the top two seeds from Region 4.

The first round of the 4A soccer playoffs begins Wednesday with Bountiful hosting a first round game against the No. 3 seed from Region 7.

Woods Cross will miss the playoffs this season.

Wednesday is also the first round of the 4A girls’ golf competition at East Bay Golf Course in Provo.

Thursday will mark the beginning of the 4A and 5A state tennis tournament at Liberty Park in Salt Lake City, where defending 5A champion Viewmont will look to repeat as a state champion.

Friday will mark the beginning of the 4A and 5A track and field competition at Brigham Young University in Provo. State champion Davis, which won both the boys’ and girls’ titles last season, is the frontrunner to once again sprint its way to another title in the 5A ranks.

Woods Cross will look to capture some of the success they had last season as well when the boys’ team won the state title over Herriman.

The playoffs will conclude next Friday with the 4A and 5A championship baseball games at Utah Valley University in Orem.

The Davis Clipper will update each playoff bracket on its website as they become available.
