CENTERVILLE — City hall is about to get a little roomier.

After last week’s pre-construction meeting, the remodeling and expansion of Centerville City Hall is scheduled to begin sometime this week. The project, which will add 2,800 square feet to the building (1,400 square feet per floor), will move the court upstairs and add a multipurpose room and office space to the lower floor.

“The multipurpose room can be used for recreation classes or training for city employees,” said Centerville City Manager Steve Thacker. “We’ll also have some office space that can be used by various departments.”

The bulk of the work will be done near the breakroom and kitchen area on the top floor, which will be torn out and expanded to create the new office space for the courts.

The justice court will then be held in the council room, with the judge’s bench moved to the opposite side of the room as the city council seats. City council will continue to be held in the same room as well, with the two groups using the space on different days and times.

Downstairs, the former courtroom will be expanded (one of the walls and a hallway is being eliminated) to become the new multipurpose room. A new kitchen will also be added just off the room, which can be used by both city employees and the Centerville recreation program. The former offices that had been used by court staff will be turned into extra office space that can be used by any department.

“It will be a good place to go if someone needs some peace and quiet to work on a special project,” said Thacker.

There will also be some cosmetic work done to some of the building’s outdoor utilities. The pump house, which is currently surrounded by plain concrete block, will be covered in stone chosen to match the outside of city hall. The HVAC unit and dumpster for the building will be surrounded by a vinyl fence with stone pillars that will match the building.

The city has said that they will rely only on the $800,000 they’ve saved and not borrow any money for the project.
