BOUNTIFUL – The Davis Darts girls’ golf team has become a state champion again.
The Darts, who last claimed a golf title under Neal Porter in 2009, outlasted four-time defending champion Bingham in the modified stableford scoring tournament, beating the Miners by scoring 326 points at Bountiful Ridge Golf Course.
Bingham scored 310 points in its attempt to become the first school to win five of the sport’s first seven state championships.
Making the most out of the one-day only tournament was Davis High’s Laura Gerner, who finished one stroke shy of earning an individual title. She finished with an even-par 72 to place solo second, one stroke better than Lone Peak’s Kerstin Fotu.
Gerner’s teammate Jessica Sloot finished in the top five for Davis as well, placing in a tie for fourth with a one-round total of 79. Ashley Hale placed in the top 10 by shooting a 12-over par 84.
The Modified Stableford scoring system allows for players to earn points on a per-hole basis based on a player’s performance for that hole. A birdie nets a player two points, with an eagle worth five points.
Pars are worth zero points, and bogeys and double-bogeys take away points from a players total.
Gerner’s round, for instance, also gave the team 90 points thanks to her overall performance on the golf course.
Gerner, Sloot and Hale combined to give the Darts 251 of the team’s 326 points. Taylor Brenchley, who shot an 87, rounded out the team’s point total with 75.
Gerner started her round with back-to-back birdies on the fourth and fifth holes. A triple-bogey seven on the seventh hole was the only blemish on her scorecard from then on, and she shot a one-under 35 on the back nine to finish at even par for the round.
Lone Peak, Weber and American Fork rounded out the top five in the 5A tournament.
In the 4A tournament, Bountiful finished fifth overall and scored 287 points as a team.
Karen Valcarce lead the Lady Braves by shooting a seven-over par 79 to finish in solo fifth place individually. She also gave the team 83 points.
Emily Green (75 points), Niki Heun (67 points) and Cassie Campos (62 points) rounded out the individual performers for the Braves.
Woods Cross finished 12th overall. Halle Smith scored 73 points for the Wildcats to lead the team.
