BOUNTIFUL — If you’re in a hurry or just don’t feel like going into the grocery store, try Winegar’s Curbside Delivery.

Since last November, customers have been able to create a shopping list online, pay for the order plus the $9.95 fee and designate a pickup time. Upon arrival at the store, customers call a designated number and the order is delivered to their car, typically within two to 2 1/2 minutes.

Sean Gilliland is the personal shopper for the Bountiful store. Similar services are offered at the Clearfield and Roy stores.

The service is offered seven days a week, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. If another time is needed, that can be arranged, he said.

“We’re catering to busy moms with a carload of kids, elderly or those with health issues who can’t or don’t want to come into the store and shop,” what have you, Gilliland said.

Some customers use the service for their weekly shopping, others bi-monthly or monthly, he said, with orders sometimes reaching the $600 to $700 level.

After a customer places his or her order, store employees or managers separate items by type. That is, frozen items go in a freezer, produce in a cooler, and dried goods in another area.

For produce, the department manager gets involved in picking and setting aside desired items, for example, Gilliland said.

Some customers want their bananas still to be a little green at the tips, others not. That request can be met, he said.

Orders involving produce or other perishables are filled as close to the customer’s expected arrival to assure freshness and quality, Gilliland said.

Customers can customize their orders. For example, one woman wanted ground beef that was 95 percent fat-free instead of 93 percent that is regularly available.

The service is also popular during case lot sales. Some customers also like it because heavy items, such as salt, will be loaded into their vehicle, he said.

About 30 curbside orders are handled a week at the Bountiful store. “We’ll be happy to do a refund on anything in the order that turns out not to be good,” Gilliland emphasized.

A store employee reviews the order with the customer when delivering it. If a produce item is out of season, that’s noted, or if any substitutions are necessary, he said.

For customers not used to filling orders online, the personal shopper can go through the process with the customer. That includes explaining how credit card security is handled by the store, Gilliland said.

“No grocery chains are currently offering curbside service,” he said.

Winegar’s began nearly 100 years ago, in 1917,  by Thomas E. Winegar, in Woods Cross. It continues to be family owned. Employees own about 30 percent of the company, the store’s website said.

The store is affiliated with Associated Foods.
