BOUNTIFUL — Do you have that old pair of shoes you just can’t bear to part with?
Even if they’re worn, have holes or other signs of wear, they can be repaired, spruced up like new by a shoe repair shop.
Bountiful’s newest such store is Tolaini Italian Craftsman Shoe Repair just off of Main Street on 500 South.
Owner Massimo Tolaini grew up around shoe repair and leather, thanks to his father, Loriano Tolaini, who has been working with leather for 60 years. Loriano’s shop is next door.
“We have combined our old world skills with modern machines to help us deliver the best shoe repair service in town,” Massimo Tolaini said.
A shoe press is used for many procedures, rather than a hammer, allowing for more precise, customized work, he said. It and other machines are imported from Italy, where the family operated a leather craft business in Pisa for decades before moving to Bountiful in 1996.
“The press allows us to apply the correct amount of pressure to soles and heels, for a more efficient bond and reshaping,” Massimo said.
Services available range from waterproofing and salt stain removal from leather, repair of zippers, soles and heels for both men’s and women’s footwear, lowering of women’s heels, full and half sole replacement, and much more.
Toe tips can be rebuilt, soles repaired/replaced for everything from cowboy boots to work boots for fire and policemen and others, to repair of climbing and golf shoes.
The shop provides pickup and delivery in the Bountiful area. Customers from outside the area can ship their items for repair and return by mail. And in many cases, a customer can get their repair done while they wait, he said.
“Good shoes can last forever when they’re properly repaired,” Massimo said, emphasizing that quality shoe can pay off in durability and long wear.
Loriano Tolaini specializes in creation of leather purses, pillows, book cases and much more. In addition, he can repair valuable books protected by leather, sold as old family Bibles.
The shoe repair shop is at 74 W. 500 South, Suite 4, Bountiful. It is open weekdays, 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m.
