SYRACUSE – The Davis County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of 4 horses near Syracuse.

Davis County Sheriff’s spokesperson Sgt. Susan Poulsen told the Clipper the horses were last seen on July 12 by a member of the family who owns the animals.

When the caretaker returned to feed the horses on July 15, they were dead, apparently from gunshot wounds.

The pasture where the horses were kept is located near 4000 W. 3000 South in an unincorporated area of Davis County.

Poulsen said the incident is an active investigation, and that they have no leads, motives or suspects in the case. She said Davis County Animal Control officers were also involved in the investigation.

Poulsen said the family was devastated.

“They were very upset,” she said. “They cared for and loved those horses for many years, and wonder why anyone would do this.”

The Humane Society of Utah is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and successful prosecution of the individual(s) responsible for shooting the horses.

“This appears to be a deliberate and cruel act,” said Gene Baierschmidt, Executive Director of the Humane Society of Utah upon learning from authorities that the horses were shot in a corral. “This kind of callous crime cannot go unchallenged. The Humane Society and our thousands of members want to see those responsible brought to justice. Itʼs our hope that this reward will generate information leading to an arrest, prosecution and a conviction.”

The Humane Society of Utah encourages anyone with information about the shootings to contact the Davis County Sheriffʼs Office or HSU Animal Cruelty Investigator John Fox at 801-261-2919. John Fox may also be reached at 801-506-2408.

The Davis County Sheriff’s Office can be reached at 801-451-4150.
