BOUNTIFUL – Every position of the Bountiful Braves volleyball team is full of good athletes, making it difficult for coach Lane Herrick to piece a line up together before the season gets underway.

With all of those athletic players, both experienced and healthy, Herrick believes that the Braves will not only compete for a region crown but also get farther into the 4A state playoffs than they had in year’s past.

“This team can be one of the better teams in the state of Utah,” he said. “The gym has been very competitive and they’re hungry to get out there and play some matches. Both our starters and bench players are excited to get out there and so am I.”

Part of the deep team includes seniors Allie Packard, Sydney Brandon and Laurel Bennion, who each will have their own responsibilities but will also be counted on to provide a “huge leadership role” to the team’s success.

Packard, said Herrick, has both a good offense and solid defense. Brandon will play primarily in the libero (defensive specialist) position and has been offered a scholarship to play volleyball for Dixie State next year.

Kennedy Redding, standing 6 feet, 4-inches tall, is also garnering scholarship offers as a junior. She plays multiple sports but will be a big piece for the Braves to use once the season begins.

Another junior McCall Asay will also be counted on to perform this season. Standing 6-feet, 2-inches, she played on the outside last year and will likely play the same position this year.

The team as a whole is still going hard at practice but is more excited for this season to start than they have been in a while.

“What they’re doing when they get into the gym is amazing and good to see,” he said. “They’re looking solid, they’re looking to do more and we as a whole have some great leadership that’s going to guide this team to a solid season.”

The Braves finished the 2013 season with a 16-10 overall record and was 11-3 in region play. Bountiful lost to Mountain View to place eighth in the 4A state volleyball tournament.
