Letters: Who’s responsible for slide?

Dear Editor

I would like to express how angry I am at North Salt Lake City Mayor Len Areve. When I turned on the local news this morning, Aug 20th, I was just appalled to hear Mayor Areve say that the city of NSL was not responsible for the damages incurred by the mud slide that happen on August 5th at 739 North Parkway Drive. Who is responsible? That is what I want to know. Someone has to take responsibility for the actions of the City approving permits for housing development done on unstable hillsides. Certainly not the homeowner, they bought the lot and home in good faith. According to Barry Edwards the City manager of NSL “both the city and the developer followed guidelines and got proper approval before beginning the latest phases of home construction”. This was in the Davis Clipper. Is this because the city is only looking for the revenue to be gained from such developments? Are they ignoring the possible disasters that have been avoided up until this home construction phase?

I have been in real estate and have worked with the city-planning departments to try and get approval to build on hillsides in Salt Lake City. I cannot imagine that polices are that much different from Salt Lake County to Davis County. I voted for Mayor Areve but I told my husband this morning that I would not vote for him again and hope others feel the same way I do.
