Every 14 seconds an older adult experiences a fall that causes serious injury and leads them to seek treatment from an emergency room.

Falls are not a normal part of aging and are a major public health concern for the growing aging population. Falls are costly and can cause individuals to lose their independence.

Fortunately, falls are preventable. With the help of a falls prevention workshop called Stepping On, individuals can learn how to protect themselves from falling.

Stepping On is an evidence-based program proven to reduce falls and build confidence in older adults. The workshop provides strength and balance exercises, home safety check suggestions, and partners with various health professionals (such as physical therapists, pharmacists, and optometrists) to deliver information about how to prevent falls.

The next Stepping On workshop begins Thursday, Oct. 6, 2 p.m. at the Bountiful Library (725 South Main, Bountiful). To sign up for this 7-week workshop, contact Morganne Housley at 801-525-5087 or mhousley@daviscountyutah.gov. Registration is required to participate.
