City made right decision with cemetery land purchase

Dear Editor:

I want to take this opportunity to thank and congratulate our Mayor, City Council and City Manager on the purchase of the property for the Bountiful City Cemetery expansion.

For the past 15 to 20 years, perhaps longer, the city officials have known that we were going to need more property to expand our ever-growing, beautiful Bountiful Cemetery.  The city had always had a handshake agreement with the family that owned and farmed the land.  The feeling was that when the family was ready to sell, the city was ready to buy.  There never was a formal written agreement only verbal and the city was careful not to force them into eminent domain.

Recently, the owners sold the land for a housing development.  Of course they had the right to do that and a buyer had the right to buy it.  But after considering this, the city decided that they really needed to secure that land for a cemetery expansion.

I think the city officials made exactly the correct decision even though it ultimately cost them more than they thought it would.  It was the right thing to do for the future benefit of our families to be buried here in the Bountiful Cemetery.

So, congratulations on a difficult but in my opinion “right” decision.  We have a wonderful place to live because of the forward thinking of our city leaders.

Joe Johnson
