FARMINGTON—Five Davis County schools have initiated a new, state-funded preschool program this year – and there are still spots open in several of them.

The H.O.P.E. (High-quality Opportunity Preschool Education) Program is open to children who turned 4 years old before Sept. 2 and have parents who are either working or attending an educational program full time.

To qualify, families must also meet income guidelines by having a family income roughly less than 200 percent of the poverty level.

The program is an all-day preschool program that runs the same hours as district elementary schools and costs nothing for families that qualify. Families must only provide transportation to and from the school.

“Many people need this program and could benefit substantially,” said Sara Southwick, H.O.P.E. Enrollment Specialist for Davis School District.

It “creates an opportunity for the parents to work and/or go to school full time, thus increasing the household income and improving the family situation,” she said.

Families who are already participating have expressed enthusiasm about the program, said Southwick.

“I’ve had a lot of people tell me that the kids are talking more, that they’re learning so much so fast, that they love their teachers and come home singing songs,” she said.

The program helps children learn through play, focusing on physical, social-emotional, cognitive and language development, according to information from the district.

Parents are also encouraged to be part of the education of their children, and teachers involve them through home visits, conferences and written communication.

Schools currently hosting the H.O.P.E. Program in Davis School District are Adelaide, Vae View, Holt, Doxey and Fremont. Families do not have to live in Davis County to participate.
