Stop doubting and defunding of climate science work

Dear Editor:

We rely on the achievements of science. Our government agencies like NASA, NOAA, EPA, and the NHS investigate our planet and universe, from tiny atomic particles to the vastness of space.  They produce breakthroughs in understanding the geography of planets, behavior of our oceans, and sources of infectious disease. Their work is subjected to peer reviews and produces fact-based knowledge to inform policy makers.

We can now better predict and manage events like disease outbreaks, extreme weather, orbital adjustments to spacecraft, and increased toxicity of the air.

Yet, policy makers often express skepticism about the conclusions of our scientists. Prevalent targets are scientists of NSA, NOAA, and the EPA, who have support of 98 percent of fellow scientists in concluding that climate change is real and global warming is exacerbated by human activity.

President Trump has proposed budget cuts to climate-science work. Hope may rest with his nominee to head State, Rex Tillerson. He acknowledges human-caused climate change and supports a “carbon fee and dividend” solution to reducing carbon emissions.  Likewise, in his Senate hearings, Scott Pruitt, nominated to head the EPA, said he does not agree that “climate change is a hoax,” as stated by Trump.

I ask Representative Stewart, Senators Hatch and Lee to stand up for climate scientists, push for full-funding of climate science, and support “carbon fee and dividend” legislation. Stewart could also give consideration to joining the House Climate Solutions Caucus in concert with fellow Utah Representative, Mia Love.
