BOUNTIFUL — If you’ve ever wanted to learn calligraphy, now’s your chance.

The Bountiful/Davis Art Center is hosting two free calligraphy workshops, March 4 and March 11, with materials provided by Utah Arts and Museums. Registration is now open for both classes, which will be taught by Mary Wells from Utah Calligraphic Artists, but those who are interested are advised to sign up early. There is a cap of 15 students for both classes.

“We’ve had a few people register already, but we want to fill up both classes,” said BDAC Executive Director Emma Dugal.

Calligraphy, which is officially defined as any kind of decorative writing or hand-painted lettering, has roots in Europe, East Asia, South Asia and even in the Mayan culture.  Wells has taught workshops on the topic at several locations in the hopes of educating people about the art form.

“She does a lot of things like this to stimulate more interest in calligraphy,” said Dugal. “She tells people about the historical aspects as well as giving them hands-on experience.”

The BDAC classes, which both run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., will walk students through calligraphic basics such as the alphabet. Wells, who has exhibited her work at the art center several times, will also help students each make a small book to take home.

“She’s a great educator,” said Dugal of Wells. “She’s excellent at energizing people.”

The workshops are being held in conjunction with a Utah Calligraphic Artists exhibit planned to open in late February at the art center. The guild, which was founded in 1979 to promote what they describe as “the lettering arts” in Utah, holds regular classes, demonstrations and exhibits at various locations. The group, which also has an extensive calligraphic library, welcomes people to attend their meetings at no charge.

The art center is also currently accepting registrations for oil painter Cheng Lian’s workshop, “Elements to Paint a Live Portrait.” The workshop, will be taught July 12-14. Over the course of three days, painters will work from a live model in two daily sessions with both group demonstrations and individualized instruction.

Tuition for the workshop costs $385 for BDAC members and $400 for non-BDAC members, not including the $25 modeling fee that both groups have to pay.

To register for one of the calligraphy classes, call the art center at 801-295-3618 during business hours. For more information about Utah Calligraphic Artists, visit To register for the Cheng Lian workshop, visit bdac/workshops.

The Bountiful/Davis Art Center is located at 90 N. Main Street in Bountiful. Parking is available behind the building and on Main Street.
