KAYSVILLE Learning and play go hand-in-hand in this event.

That’s the goal organizers had for their upcoming Battle of the Sexes Game Night for Singles, set for tonight, Feb. 16, from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Utah House in Kaysville. The event, sponsored by the USU extension, will combine a variety of games with some discussion about what makes a healthy relationship.

“We’re going to be doing interactive games and activities, and that will be intermingled with talking about relationships,” said Naomi Brower, a USU extension associate professor. “Rather than a sit-down class, which people often don’t want to go to, we wanted to do something fun.”

The event will combine different topics covering various aspects of relationship health with games that illustrate the point. Many of the games encourage interaction with other attendees as well.

“For one game, we’ve created his and her needs pizzas,” said Brower. “You work with another person – or by yourself if you really want – and ask yourself ‘If it was an ideal world, what would my relationship needs be?’”

The game, like others planned for the event, is designed to focus less on some sort of gender binary and more on bridging the disagreements and differences of opinion that can crop up in any relationship.

“It’s not really that men and women are so different,” she said. “It’s more about people realizing that we all have differences, but that we can work together to meet the different needs people have in a relationship.”

The goal, according to Brower, is to provide a safe and fun space where single people can get some insights about past relationships they may have had, and those they may have in the future.

“My intent is to provide an opportunity for single individuals to learn what it takes to be in a healthy relationship and what a healthy relationship looks like,” she said. “We want them to feel like they can come and talk to other like-minded individuals in a healthy and positive environment.”

Though the extension already has several such opportunities for married couples, the game night is part of a new effort by the extension to make singles feel more welcome.

“I feel like we have so many more opportunities for couples, I wanted to provide more opportunities for singles,” she said. “We plan to implement more of these in the next few months.”

The event is free, but pre-registration is required at eventbrite.com/e/battle-of-the-sexes-game-night-for-singles-tickets-30473561242. The registration is to let them know about class count, so it can be done the day of the event. The Utah House is located at 920 S. 50 West in Kaysville.
