DAVIS--With the return of four All-State swimmers from its squads last season, the Davis High program looks to build on an 11th place finish for the boys team and a 15th place finish for the girls.
Senior All-State swimmer Elsa Mumford, the school record holder in the 100 breaststroke, along with All-State swimmers junior Tom Mi (100 freestyle, 400 free relay, 200 free relay), junior Nathan Skonnard (400 free relay) and Max Deller (200 free relay) will lead a strong group of swimmers for the Darts this year.
Head coach Kit Barker said seniors Olivia Smith, Jessica Barker, Zac Michaelson, and Carter Barrus; juniors Whitney Carlson and Wil O’Brien, sophomores Kira Halls, Kyle Lortz and Jonah Carlson will be key swimmers that will provide leadership in and out of the pool for her squad as well, while incoming freshmen Shallen Foote, Winston Mi and Drake Reatherford are also expected to make a splash for Davis.
The Darts began their 2017-18 season at the Box Elder Invitational Nov. 4 where both squads placed second a year ago. This year, the boys placed second behind Mi’s three first place finishes, including two meet records in the 100 freestyle and the 200 free relay – teamed with Skonnard, Deller and Lortz. Mi took home the MVP award for outstanding performance. Skonnard finished second in the 100 free and fifth in the 100 butterfly while Deller took second in the 50 free and fourth in the 100 free.
The girls squad placed third at the Invite with a meet record-performance from the 200 free relay team of Smith, Mumford, Foote and Barker and first place finishes in the 400 free relay (Halls, Foote, Carlson and Barker), 200 free (Barker), 400 free (Barker) and Smith (200 Individual Medley). Other top finishes were second in the 200 IM (Halls), second in the 100 backstroke (Halls), third in the 100 breaststroke (Smith), second in the 100 free (Carlson), second in the 400 free (Mumford), third in the 100 fly (Foote), third in the 100 back (Foote) and fifth in the 200 free (Carlson).
“This was a meter pool which is a little longer than we are used to, but the kids treated it like any other race and produced some great performances,” Barker said.
Also on the girls squad this season are Savannah Argyle, Bethany Balling, Rachel Barker, Callie Chamberlain, Suzannah Gracey, Keisha Jimenez, Annalea Karren, Isabel Karren, Miranda Mann, Ellyssa Nelson, Briann Nielson, Rebecca Palmer, Molly Phillips, Aidan Romney, Vinnessa Seely, Tayleigh Shurtliff, Morgan Smith, Holly Witherspoon and Monica Woodward.
On the boys side are Tase Austin, Adam Barber, Blake Bennett, Payton Bingham, Connor Bott, Caleb Cutler, Tucker Davis, Aaron Dobson, Alex Findlay, Dane Jensen, Ben Landheim, Matthew Long, Brycen Nacey, Gavin Nordgran, Shaun Pirtle, Tanner SIllito, Adam Swasey, Declan Turnbaugh and Ethan West.
“Both girls and boys are strong this year and we have depth as well as several breakout swimmers,” Barker said. “We are looking forward to a great showing in this new region.”
So far this season, the Darts placed third and the boys took fifth at the Cedar City Invitational Nov. 10-11.
Top finishers for Davis were Mi (second, 200 free; second, 500 free), Jessica Barker (second, 200 free; third, 500 free), Mumford (third, 100 breast; sixth, 200 free), Lortz (fifth, 200 IM, seventh, 100 breast); O’Brien (sixth, 500 free; seventh, 200 IM); Foote (fifth, 100 free) and Smith (sixth, 100 breast).
“It was a great bonding experience for our swimmers and they came back with memories of a lifetime,” Barker said.
At the Region Relays at Ogden Nov. 14, the boys and girls teams placed first in the relay-only event.
Out of 27 teams at the Thanksgiving Invitational Nov. 17-18, the Darts’ boys squad finished sixth with the girls taking 11th place. Deller, in just his second year on the team, tied for first place in the 50 freestyle after being in fourth position at the wall. Other top finishers for Davis were Mi (first, 100 free; fifth, 200 free), the boys 200 free relay team of Mi, Skonnard, Michaelson and Deller (second), Lortz (second, 100 breast; seventh, 200 IM), Barker, (fifth, 500 free; seventh, 200 free), Smith (fifth, 100 breast), Mumford (seventh, 100 breast), Foote, who came down with the flu, “toughed it out for her teammates” swimming with the girls 200 free relay and girls 400 free relay teams which placed eighth and 10th respectively.
“It was an all-around great meet,” Barker said.
Davis is scheduled to compete at Syracuse Nov. 28, the Davis District Meet Dec. 2, against Fremont Dec. 7, at Weber Jan. 11 and in tri-meets Dec. 15, Jan. 4 and Jan. 18. The Region 1 championships are scheduled for Jan. 26 with the 6A state meet Feb. 8, 9, and 10.
