ANTELOPE ISLAND — A little bit of moonlight can make the world look entirely brand new.

Registration is currently available for the 16th annual Antelope Island Moonlight Bike Ride, scheduled for July 10 at 10 p.m. Pre-registration is available until June 24 for this non-competitive bike ride, which is 22 miles long and goes from the Marina to Fielding Garr Ranch and back again.

“This route provides a breathtaking view of the Great Salt Lake and the lights across the lake,” said Neka Roundy, who helps to organize the all-ages event. “It’s all illuminated by the full moon.”

Costumes and decorated bikes, a long tradition of the annual moonlight rides, are being especially encouraged this year. At the ride’s midpoint at Fielding Garr Ranch, refreshments will be served and prizes will be given for the best costume and bike decorations that fit with this year’s theme, “Moonlight Madness.”

Roundy encourages riders to let their imagination go crazy.

“We expect to see some really wild costumes this year,” said Roundy. In previous years costumes have included everything from babies (complete with bottle and pacifier) to the Joker (from “The Dark Night”).

Working headlights and reflectors are required for the event, in accordance with state law. ANSI/Snell approved helmets are also mandatory, and reflective clothing is recommended. Those without lights or helmet will not be allowed to participate in the ride.

Because of this, a light package from The Biker’s Edge (headlight, taillight and battery) will be available for purchase at the event. Helmets will also be available to buy, though these will be provided by the Davis County Health Department.

Pre-registration, which costs $20 for those over 14 and $15 for those under 14, includes park entry and access to the refreshments that will be served at Fielding Garr Ranch until midnight. Registration forms are available online at www.daviscountyutah.gov, and additional information can be found by calling 451-3286.

After June 24, registration prices for everyone go up $5. As usual, all money raised by the event will go directly toward Antelope Island State Park projects.
