After more than a month of readying the ground, the first concrete footing for the art center is scheduled to be poured today, July 28. Construction on the walls is scheduled to start three or four weeks later, giving residents a clearer view of the progress on the arts and theater complex.
“We’re finally starting to come up out of the ground,” said Centerville Assistant City Manager Blaine Lutz. “Over the next couple of months, people who come to the site (535 N. 400 West, the north side of Parrish Lane) will be able to see more than just a big hole.”
Since the art center’s groundbreaking in late May, construction crews have been digging the initial pit and making sure the ground would be stable enough for the concrete footings. Though there were some groundwater issues that would have caused trouble for any vertical construction, special drainage has taken care of those problems and stabilized the ground.
According to current plans, the final project will be an approximately 57,000-square-foot, three-story structure, complete with a main stage, a black box theater, and a small outdoor amphitheater. The arts center will be able to be used by arts groups throughout the county, including some school groups.
Currently, the project is scheduled to have a January 2011 grand opening.
