FARMINGTON — As summer starts to wind down, it’s time to think of ways to stay physically active. The annual Davis County Walks wellness program does just that by encouraging people of all ages to take part in the 5K Walk/Run at the Legacy Events Center, 151 S. 1100 W. in Farmington, Saturday, Aug. 15.

The event kicks off at 7:30 a.m. with a Kids Fun Race at 8:30 a.m.

“All of the younger kids who complete the half-mile, specially-marked, noncompetitive course around the Davis County Fair area will get a participation medal,” said 5K event organizer, Jessica Hardcastle. There is no charge for the children, but pre-registration is required.

“We invite everyone to take the first step to better health and participate in this Davis County Walks 5K event,” said Lewis Garrett, director of the Davis County Health Department, in a news release.

“There are many benefits to walking. Research shows a 30-40 percent reduction in the risk of heart disease and 50 percent reduction in the risk for premature death.”

Those participants 60 years and older are free, and individuals 59 and under are $15 if preregistered by Aug 7. Everyone receives a T-shirt and refreshments at the finish line. Registration the day of the event will be $20 and begins at 6:30 a.m. at the Legacy Events Center.

“We’ve set up the 5K event with overall and senior categories broken down for males and females,” Hardcastle said. “Our top finishers in each category will receive gift cards. Also, drawings for other prizes will be held to include everyone participating in the 5K.”

Registration forms are available at the Davis County Health Department, 50 E. State Street, Annex Bldg. (Room 218), Farmington, or download a form at www.daviscounty utah.gov/dcw.

“Walking is a great physical activity to maintain a healthy weight and reduce the risk for chronic disease including cancer, heart disease, and diabetes,” said Sally Kershisnik, director of the county health department’s Family Health and Senior Services Division.

“Whether people join us on Aug. 15 to walk or run this easy and flat 5K course, they’ll have a good time doing something that is fun and healthy for them.”
