I feel a need to speak out in response to the letter written by JoAnn Hamilton in the Clipper of July 16, 2009, titled “Bountiful needs man like Novak.” I believe it took a lot of courage for JoAnn to share her personal concerns in regards to the “alcohol variance” issues that created such a stir in recent months.
At the first of her article she specifically expresses that her remarks reflect her evaluation of our mayor not as a person, but as a representative of the people. As she proceeds in her letter she is giving personal evidence of why she does not support the leadership of the mayor.
Many who have read her article will relate to her concerns, and perhaps there are many who will disagree. However, the allegations she makes should not be glossed over as someone who just doesn't like the mayor.
She points out many specific situations, personal experiences and actual public statements that were made by the owner of El Matador himself in testimony before the DABC that can be verified to illustrate why she was deeply concerned about the mayor’s leadership in regards to this issue.
Again, she is talking about his role as a representative of the people. JoAnn is a person who has illustrated for a long time where her priorities are in relation to the values she believes in.
There is nothing inherently wrong with moving forward in a progressive agenda that promotes the building up of our downtown areas and improving our city’s image. But then again there is something to be said for holding on to values that will safeguard our children by upholding an ordinance that was already on the books.
If she made an attempt to speak out and was treated with hostility wouldn’t she have cause to question the leadership of the mayor? If she asked for a copy of the minutes of the meeting where the ordinance was changed and received no response after many requests, then again her questioning the actions of the mayor would be expected.
And finally if you attend a meeting of the State Alcohol Commission and witness the owner of the El Matador share testimony that a deal had been made by the mayor and city council that he would be given a beer license before the issue had been taken to the people; then would you not question the ethics of your city government?
Since the writing of the letter to the paper, there have been a barrage of letters written in response, almost attacking JoAnn for speaking out. But she has every right to share her experiences and to give her reasons for supporting a change of leadership in our city.
It is for you the reader to determine if the allegations that JoAnn made have merit and speak for the issues that you value the most. Putting someone into public office should not be viewed as a popularity contest, but rather an opportunity to find a candidate who will respectfully respond to the priorities and values of those they represent.
