WOODS CROSS — What’s the saying? Better to dance with the devil you know rather than the devil you don’t know.

If that is true, then Woods Cross girls soccer team is exactly where it wants to be with regards to the state 4A semi-final match scheduled for this morning at 11 at Juan Diego High School.

“We know what Bonneville likes to do,” said assistant coach Sean Simons, who answered questions for Head Coach Kevin Rigby who is suffering from a case of laryngitis. “Bonneville is a very good team and they are playing great soccer right now. They have been on a roll.”

The Lakers knocked off East in overtime to get to the semi-final. Many people called that game an upset, but Simons doesn’t see the win that way.

“We didn’t consider that game an upset,” he said. “We know what Bonneville can do, we knew they had a very good chance at winning that game.”

What Bonneville does is throw a unique formation and aggressive style of play at opponents. The style, when watched by the lay person could be considered a basketball fast break offense that has people who can shoot from outside or hit lay ups.

“Bonneville will attack you and they’ll try to shoot from outside, but they are very capable of moving in for closer strikes,” Simons said. “They keep you on your toes the entire game.”

“They are also big and physical and aggressive.”

Many teams have taken to Woods Cross with the attitude of stopping standout Nikki Fernandes at all cost. To the Wildcats’ credit the entire team has worked together to help provide a more spread out offense.

“It took some time for Nikki to get to know her teammates since she just moved here this year,” Simon said. “The entire team has worked hard to get used to playing together and it shows the character of the team that they have come so far in just one season together. They are really clicking.”

Woods Cross is on a roll of its own with a thrilling 2-1 overtime victory over Highland in the first round and a 7-0 dismantling of Timpview in the quarter-finals to have earned its place in the semi-finals.

“The girls have confidence in their play right now,” Simons said. “They are excited to play Bonneville again.

“They know what they are up against and know they can beat Bonneville, but on the other hand they also know how good they are and we all know Bonneville is a tough, very good team and we have to be ready for this game.”
