AG’s office clears deputy in shooting

FARMINGTON —The Utah Attorney General’s Office has found the Davis County Sheriff’s deputy who shot Farmington firefighter Brian Wood last month was justified.

In a three-page letter to Davis County Attorney Troy Rawlings, the AG’s office said that Wood pointed his .45 caliber handgun directly at the officers and other officers next to him, and “The deputy reasonably believed that the use of deadly force was necessary to prevent death or serious bodily injury to himself or other officers.”

Wood, a Farmington firefighter held police in a standoff for nearly 12 hours on Sept. 22, after he called police, telling them he had just assaulted his wife. “come get me.”

The AG’s Criminal Justice Division was asked to investigate the case and the deputy who fired the shot was placed on leave.
