BOUNTIFUL ó After 26 years of service in the military, including being awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Keith L. Thurgood has been promoted to the rank of major general in the U.S. Army. ##M:MORE##

Thurgood is currently serving as the commander of the U.S. Army and Air Force Exchange Service in Dallas. He has served in the transportation field during his military career. AAFES is the Department of Defenseís largest retail exchange service with more than 3,000 facilities in more than 30 countries.

He has also earned three awards of the Meritorious Service Medal, four of the Army Commendation Medal and five of the Army Achievement Medal.

Thurgood has experience in commanding a company, a logistics support battalion and a training brigade. He was also assigned as the commanding general of the 143rd Transportation Command (Forward) and the deputy commander of the 377th Theater Support Command (Forward) in support of Iraqi Freedom. He has served as director of movements, distribution and transportation for the Combined Forces Land Component Command Kuwait.

He earned his bachelor's degree from Brigham Young University in 1981, and received a masterís of business administration in 1987 from Boston University. He went on to earn a doctorate in 2008 from Capella University, Minneapolis, Minn.

Thurgood has two children, living in Salt Lake City and Plano, Texas. He is the son of Leon and Donna Thurgood of Bountiful.
