Can we afford the Regional Theatre and the Bountiful Museum? Twelve million dollars for the South Davis Regional Theater and $2 million for the Bountiful Museum (Clipper, 17 Sept. 2008). ##M:MORE## A million here, a million there. Pretty soon that adds up to real money. Staffing, utilities and maintenance are a continuing cost. In serious economic times there may be other options.
Here are some:
The Bountiful Arts Building just north of the designated area for the new museum is already there. It should accommodate what is in the rented museum at 750 South Main. Two purposes can be served in one building.
As for the Regional ìTheaterî in Centerville being paid for through voter approved sales tax, consider how many other stage theaters there are in the valley:
Capitol Theatre, Abravanel Hall, Conference Center, Desert Star Playhouse, Hale Centre Theatre, Kingsbury Hall, Pioneer Memorial Theatre, Off Broadway Theatre, Rose Wagner Performing Arts Theatre, Salt Lake Acting Theatre, the proposed $80 million Utah Theatre renovation and a similar one for Sandy. Most are convenient to Trax or FrontRunner.
Terminate the South Davis Regional Theater. Return the sales tax monies or divert them to public transit.
