The pipe bomb exploded in a residential mailbox in the Ford Canyon Crossing area, on a street which Centerville Police Lt. Paul Child describes as quiet, with limited visibility.
Police received the report of the mailbox exploding at 9:50 p.m.
Child said the metal pipe bomb was placed in a large, well built brick mailbox and when it was blown up, it decimated the mailbox. Pieces of brick were thrown at least 100 feet, Child said. ìIt had the potential to hurt or kill anyone near it,î he said.
Detectives recovered portions of the bomb and are investigating the incident, although they currently have no suspects, and no one reported seeing anything suspicious. ìWeíd be interested in hearing from anyone with any information,î Child said.
He warns if anyone finds a pipe bomb in their mailbox not to touch it, but immediately call police.
Child said it seems like several areas in south Davis County have seen more than the usual amount of vandalism this year. A couple of areas of Centerville have been hit hard and over the weekend, Best Buy Auto, 82 N. Main, had $11,400 in damage done to 16 vehicles, by vandals who scratched the paint.
Also, Child said, thereís been a significant amount of graffiti in Centerville and West Bountiful.
Child said vandalism usually goes up in the summer, but this year there seems to be even more than is usual even during the summer.
