ìIf every boy in America knew and observed the Scout Oath, we would do away with most of the jails and prisons in this country,î said Gordon B. Hinckley, former president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
The monument is based off a sketch made by Robert Baden-Powell for the cover of ìScouting for Boysî in 1908. Baden-Powell created the Boy Scouts in 1899 during the Boer War, when he trained local boys to be messengers in order to give his troops a rest.
If enough funds are raised to move ahead with the project, the sculpture will be made by Stanley J. Watts, who has also done sculptures for Brigham Youngís grave in Salt Lake and the National Fallen Firefighterís Memorial in Maryland.
The total price tag for the sculpture, which will also feature the Scout Oath, Scout Law, and Scout Motto and Slogan, has a total price tag of $35,000. Though contributions have been received from outside the city (and continue to be welcome), the project committee hopes for most of the money to come from the donations of Woods Cross residents. An account has been set up at the Utah First Credit Union in Woods Cross.
More information on the sculpture can be found at www.woodscross.com, under the ìHelpful Linksî section, or by calling Smith at 298-7638.
