FARMINGTON ó It may not be the Boston Marathon, but last year, about 200 people of all ages hit the pavement for another Davis Walks/Run. ##M:MORE## The 5K course, which starts and ends at the Davis Event Center, isnít intended to be strenuous. Rather, itís meant to be a fun, easy course ñ one that anyone from expert level to beginner can follow.

This yearís run/walk, Aug. 16, will again start at 7:30 a.m. at the Event Center for adults. Registration is $20 for adults and free for anyone aged 65 and older. Added this year is a new half-mile kids run/walk at 8:30 a.m. It is free.

The activity is sponsored by the Senior Services Division of the Davis County Health Department.

ìWe invite everyone to take the first step to better health and participate in this Davis County Walks 5K event,î said Davis County Health Department director Lewis Garrett.

ìThere are many benefits to walking. Research shows a 30-40 percent ratio reduction in the risk of heart disease and 50 percent reduction in the risk to premature death,î he said.

ìWalking is a great physical activity to maintain a healthy weight and reduce the risk for chronic disease including cancer, heart disease and diabetes,î said Sally Kershisnik, director of the county health departmentís Family Health Senior Service Division.

ìWhether people join us on Saturday to walk or run this easy and flat five kilometer course, theyíll have a good time doing something that is fun and healthy for them.î

Event organizer and chair Dave Spence said there will be T-shirts for each participant and refreshments at the finish line.

There will be overall and senior categories for males and females in the adult race. Top finishers in each category will receive gift cards: first place, $100, second place, $75, and third place, $50.

In addition, drawings for other prizes will be held to include every participant.

Registration will be held Saturday morning, 6:30 a.m. to 7:15 a.m., with forms also available at the Health Department at 50 E. State Street, Annex Building, Room 218, Farmington, or download the form from the Davis County Walks website at www.daviscountyutah.gov/dcw.
