WOODS CROSS ó Life Scout Tom Smithís enthusiasm for his Eagle Scout project recently got a big boost, in miniature form. Fifteen-year-old Smith is in the process of raising $35,000 to build a seven-and-a-half foot bronze sculpture of a Boy Scout to be placed in the Woods Cross City Park. The project will cost an estimated $35,000 and Smith recently presented artist Stanley J. Watts with the first installment ó a check for $7,000. In turn, Watts showed Smith a small clay replica of the sculpture, created from a sketch by Scoutingís founder Robert Baden-Powell, depicting a Boy Scout peering off a cliff atop an 8- to 10-foot base. The sculpture commemorates 100 years of Scouting. ##M:MORE##

Smith plans on displaying the names of those who contribute $500 or more on the monument, believing that display will leave a lasting legacy for good on future generations. So far, the names of 10 individuals and couples will appear on the monument, and donations have been received not only from Scouters of Woods Cross, but from Kaysville, Layton, Bountiful, West Bountiful, North Salt Lake and Salt Lake City.

Donations should be deposited in the Woods Cross Scout Monument Fund at the Utah First Credit Union 1520 S. 500 West. When sufficient funds are received the account will be closed.

Smith said that if the monument is not erected by 2014, all contributions will be returned.

Those who would like Smith to pick up their contribution for deposit, or who have other questions may call Smith at 298-7638.
