From noon until 10 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 29, families are invited to celebrate Capitol Discovery Day. The day will include tours, live music and games. The day is designed to help promote learning about our state’s Capitol, what happens there and to feel comfortable around the grounds and building.
Hoop n’ stick, potato sack races, jump rope and parachute games are some of the activities the day will include. Local bands will play throughout the day and into the evening as people are invited to enjoy the Capitol grounds themselves.
Inside the capitol, children will be invited to help create a replica of the capitol rotunda with tooth picks and gum drops. They’ll also sculpt clay lions or wyverns found in the Capitol and color black and white images of the rotunda. During the activities, choirs will be singing within the Capitol’s rotunda itself.
Various local companies will also be providing food for the occasion, which the Capitol Preservation Board says helps support those companies by offering an opportunity to sample products.
Ending off the night, a movie under the stars showing of “Bedtime Stories” and free popcorn will begin as the sun sets. The Voo Doo Orchestra will also play beginning at 7:30 p.m.
