MIDVALE ó Good news for fans of Bountiful and Woods Cross athletics.

Those treks to Cache County will soon be a thing of the past. The final draft of the Utah High School Activities Association realignment released Wednesday has the Braves and Wildcats heading to Salt Lake rather than Logan. The new Region 6 will consist of Woods Cross, Bountiful, East, Highland, Olympus, Stansbury, Tooele and School of the Performing Arts (SPA).##M:MORE##

ìWeíre very pleased with the change,î said Bountiful Assistant Principal Ross Harris. ìThis will rekindle some of the older rivalries we used to have with schools like Highland, Olympus and East.î

Region 5 is full of schools north and closer in proximity with Bonneville, Box Elder, Logan, Mountain Crest, Ogden, and Sky View.

Woods Cross Principal Vicki Ingram said the Wildcats have enjoyed their relationships with the schools up north, but believes the change is good.

ìThe schools in Region 5 have been great,î Ingram said. ìWeíve enjoyed those teams and schools, but this is a better fit for everyone with less travel.î

Much has been written and discussed over the travel concerns for schools in the current Region 5. On more than one occasion, teams have been forced to stay overnight due to weather in Wellsville Canyon.

ìWeíve had plenty of times where weíve told students to not go to games because of the travel and weather,î Harris said.

ìWeíve always been concerned about the travel for the sake of our students and also the students from the schools up there when they come to play us here,î Ingram said. ìThis is much safer.î

Viewmont and Davis remain nearly unchanged from the Region 1 they have been involved in over the last few years.

Region 1 is the largest with nine schools consisting of the Darts and Vikings, Clearfield, Fremont, Layton, Northridge, Syracuse, Weber and new 5A school, Roy.

ìThis is the final draft and will go into effect in the fall of 2009,î said UHSAA Associate Director Bart Thompson. ìThis coming school year things will be as they have been over the past few years. The changes wonít go into place for a year.

ìThis is needed to help with scheduling and things like that.î

The new alignment will remain in place through the end of the 2013 season.
