FARMINGTON ó John F. Spencer, the former Centerville police officer who pleaded guilty to child abuse and aggravated assault has been sentenced to a year in jail and three years on probation.

Spencer was arrested in May 2007 in Layton and pleaded guilty to the third-degree felony counts in February. Spencer struck his wife and choked her, then grabbed his 5-year-old daughter by the hair and banged her head on the floor, according to a police report.

He resigned from the Centerville Police in May and his peace officer certification was revoked earlier this year.

Second District Judge Jon Memmott said he will review the sentence in four months and may release Spencer if he has arranged for mental health treatment. Spencer earlier had been ordered to undergo a mental health evaluation at the Utah State Prison.
