“They shocked us,” said Woods Cross coach Kevin Rigby. “They made some shots that I’m still amazed went in for them.”
The Lakers took a 2-0 lead into the break and Woods Cross cut that to a 2-1 deficit when Shae Fernandes found the net early in the second half. Bonneville attacked immediately and pushed the lead to 3-1.
Kendra Pemberton moved Woods Cross to within 3-2 with a goal off a corner kick seconds later. But the Lakers kept steamrolling as the Lakers scored on a funky shot that actually hit the bottom of the cross bar and rolled through and Bonneville led 4-2.
“That was just an amazing shot that went in for them,” Rigby said. “We had one that hit the bar and bounced out so it shows how weird the game is.”
Pemberton picked up another goal and Bonneville added another to complete the flurry of goals.
“The game was evenly played statistically,” Rigby said. “They just made some amazing shots. I give them a lot of credit because they just attacked us and came away with the win.”
Both teams had 14 shots on goal with each team also having three corner kicks.
“We made good on three out of 14 shots and that’s pretty good,” Rigby said. “They made six out of 14 shots and that’s just crazy.”
Rigby noted how pleased he was with his team on and off the field this season.
“We don’t have regrets,” he said. “We played each game hard and we had a great group of young ladies. I am just so proud of all of them.”
