OGDEN —The Viewmont girls tennis team faced a difficult task last week as it entered the second day of the Region 1 championship tournament. Win every match and be crowned champions or lose and hand watch arch-rival Davis celebrate as it did a year ago. But coach Scott Judy knew he had a team that could manage the challenge…it all began in August.

“I took the team on a hike up in the mountains and we had a long talk and set some goals. I told them I expected them to be Region champions, go undefeated through Region play and place high at state,” Judy said.

“I told them I knew they had what it took to accomplish these things and they believed it as well. Then it was time to get it done.”

So a week ago, with the undefeated Region season under its belt, the Vikings went out and won each match and edged the Darts by one point for the championship.

First singles Sidney Burningham placed third in a match Judy knew the Viking would take.

“I knew before the match started that Sidney had it,” Judy said. “She is a tough player and was really looking good. She went out there and did the job.”

In second singles, Paige Anderson came from behind and captured third (0-6, 6-2, 6-0).

“After Paige’s first set I was a little concerned but Paige came back and just got into her game and you could feel her confidence grow with each point,” Judy said.

“I’m real proud of her because to get beat 6-0 right out of the gate is tough and to see her come back and then dominate like she did speaks volumes of her ability.”

Third single, Jasmine Godfrey, captured the Region title with a 6-3, 7-5 win.

“This was big because Jasmine had never really been in a situation where everything came down to her, but the championship did,” Judy said. “Everyone else had played and if she won, we won. That’s a ton of pressure and she did great.”

Hilari Bloomfield and Rachel Rawlings steamrolled through their final 6-1, 6-1 to become Region 1 champions.

“They are just so dominant,” Judy said. “The only point they gave up was due to little mistakes. They controlled the match from the beginning.”

Judy also called the second doubles victory of Lady Vikings Alyssa St. Jeor and McKelle Sanders “a match that was over before it began.”

Alyssa and McKelle have so much power that it’s tough for other teams to stop them.”

After it was all over, Judy took a deep breath.

“This is great,” he said. “To win by one point over Davis is just great. The girls had to get it done today and they all stepped it up and did the job. Boy, it was a close one.”
